Election officials provide security as early voting ends in Georgia

EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Early voting is over in Georgia, and now we’re just four days away from the presidential election.

We have already seen a historic push for early voting this election cycle.

But when it comes to security, many concerns remain once people go to the polls.

Officials say they are taking every precaution possible to ensure election security.

Nancy Gay, executive director of the Columbia County Board of Elections, says they have worked to ensure the safety of their poll workers and voters.

“Fortunately, in Columbia County, we are fortunate to have a wonderful sheriff’s office that believes it is required by law to designate a deputy in each precinct,” Gay said.

Gay says it’s something they’ve been doing for years.

She also says they have safeguards in place.

IN RICHMOND COUNTY:

  • Officials say 42% of eligible voters cast ballots, including early and by mail.

“We also worked with the sheriff’s office to get radios, just in case, just as a backup if the cell towers were to go down, because we still need some form of communication with our poll workers ” she said. said.

Cybersecurity is also a priority for many voters, but Gay says they’re prepared for it, too.

“Nothing is connected to Wi-Fi. The voting machines themselves, the BMDS and the printers, the only thing they are connected to each other is a power source, and then the tabulators and pads -notes. They’re mining or using cellular data, but nothing is actually connected to Wi-Fi,” Gay said.

She says if you’re heading to the polls on Election Day, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Polls for South Carolina's primary elections open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

“They should go online to ‘My Voter Page’ and review a sample ballot. There are some amendments on the ballot that they are not aware of. There’s an ESPLOST question on the ballot that they probably don’t know about,” Gay said.

Gay says to remember it’s illegal to wear a campaign or candidate shirt and take out your phone while voting.
