Canadian MP Chandra Arya hoists Hindu flag outside Parliament, says community underrepresented in politics

Canadian MP Chandra Arya, of Indian origin, hoisted a Hindu flag – a saffron triangular flag with the symbol ‘Oh my God’ – in front of Parliament to mark “Hindu Heritage Month” in November. He called for the involvement of more Hindu Canadians in politics, saying they were “underrepresented.”

This is the third time Arya has hoisted the Hindu flag during Hindu Heritage Month since 2022. Hindu Heritage Month is an annual celebration aimed at learning and celebrating the cultural, intellectual and spiritual heritage of Hinduism.

Arya, a Hindu Canadian, who has spoken out against Khalistani extremism, said Hindu Canadians are one of the most prosperous communities in Canada. Hindu Canadians are the third largest religious group in Canada.

“We raised the Hindu flag with our sacred Aum symbol on the grounds of Parliament Hill to mark the start of Hindu Heritage Month in November. As I mentioned when I first raised the flag in 2022, a new era for Hindus in Canada has begun. ” he tweeted.

“We are one of the most educated and prosperous communities in Canada, making strong and positive contributions to Canadian society and the economy. While we Hindus punch above our weight in all sectors of Canadian society, we are underrepresented in the political sphere. to my fellow Hindus to become more involved in our democratic process. Happy Hindu Heritage Month! » he said.

Arya’s action came a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his Diwali wishes and said his government would always stand with Hindu Canadians to ensure their safety and security so that they can practice freely and proudly their religion.

“Diwali in Canada would not be possible without our incredible Indo-Canadian community. Indo-Canadians represent the best of Canada – as artists and entrepreneurs, doctors and teachers, business, community and cultural leaders. This Diwali, we celebrate them and the light they bring to communities across Canada,” Trudeau said.

“Diwali is particularly important to Hindu Canadians – one of Canada’s largest and most diverse diasporas. This November, as we celebrate Hindu Heritage Month in Canada, let’s join the community and celebrate. We will always stand with Hindu Canadians to ensure their safety and security so that they can freely and proudly practice their religion,” he added.

Arya has spoken out against temple defacement and other acts of violence by pro-Khalistanis in Canada, which is facing a massive diplomatic standoff with India over the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

Last year, Trudeau alleged that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Nijjar, who was wanted by India. New Delhi has vehemently denied the allegations and downgraded its ties with Ottawa.

Amid the diplomatic row, Arya had raised concerns over Hindu Canadians facing threats from pro-Khalistanis and vandalized temples in Canada. He recently received a threatening video message from Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, another Khalistan terrorist wanted by India, telling him and his supporters to “go back to India”.

Pannun, the head of the U.S.-based Sikhs For Justice group, said Arya was working against Canadian interests. In response, the Indian-origin MP highlighted the contributions of Hindu Canadians and said “Canada is our land.”
