Pool at Kingfisher Leisure Center in Sudbury to reopen next month

A swimming pool which had to close its doors in August following the damage to a glass roof must finally reopen next month.

Originally the swimming pool at the Kingfisher Leisure Center in Sudbury, Suffolk, was only supposed to be closed until mid-September.

But inspectors then realized other signs were also affected, leading to further delays.

The establishment will reopen on December 11, but with temporary safety measures in place.

Laura Smith, Babergh Town Council’s Green Party cabinet member for thriving communities, said the glass roof had now been sealed with a new safety platform installed underneath.

“We would like to thank everyone for their understanding. We know this closure has caused disruption, but we have had to prioritize people’s safety,” she said.

“This is a complex issue and we have had to balance the need to reopen the pool as quickly as possible with finding the best long-term solution.”

The council is currently considering its longer-term options, including removing the 170 specially designed panels and replacing them with a different type of roof.

“This may be a better option than a like-for-like replacement of the existing glass, and we are working on the design and costs,” she added.

Other repairs to the pool were made while it was closed.

More than £2.3 million was spent upgrading the leisure center in 2019.
