New York City sets world record for longest marathon, organizers say

The New York Marathon broke the record for the world’s largest marathon on Sunday, with 55,646 runners crossing the finish line in Central Park, organizers said.

This broke the record set by the Berlin Marathon in September, when 54,280 people completed the major world marathon.

The race, which spans five boroughs, had the largest number of women ever arriving with 24,731, organizers said, as more amateur enthusiasts flock to long-distance running in the United States.

Dutchman Abdi Nageeye won the men’s race on Sunday, while Sheila Chepkirui led a Kenyan to the top of the women’s podium.

Dutchman Abdi Nageeye survived a tense battle throughout the final kilometer to win the marathon in two hours seven minutes and 39 seconds, while Sheila Chepkirui led a Kenyan to the women’s podium in 2:24:35.
