How can Utah HC boost their power play?

Last night’s game in Winnipeg came down to razor-thin margins, as is the case with most Utah hockey club matchups against top competition.

In each of them, one statistic stood out glaringly: the lack of firepower on the power play.

Even head coach André Tourigny is beside himself looking for answers to what was a powerful offense that went through a huge cold streak.

Since October 14, the team’s power play has been mired in a 1-for-18 streak, with the only conversion coming in the 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames, which was the first goal in home power play in the Delta Center and in franchise history.

“We have good looks, but we need more,” Tourigny said. “It will come from better entries and winning battles.”

By the way, according to Google, a board battle is a basic skill for either protecting the puck or stealing it safely, and that’s something Utah couldn’t do against the Jets anymore big and more physical on Tuesday.

That lack of physicality also showed itself, like in games against Los Angeles, Boston and Vegas, where for the most part, Utah got away with it.

But with the biggest forward being Kevin Stenlund at 6-foot-5, there might come a time when Tourigny considers employing him on the power play to change the dynamic.

Utah has the skills to score on the power play, but now it’s about getting into the dirty zones and fighting for position.

And this is an area in which they cannot currently progress.
