Failed businesses, rotten food and too much money to buy fuel. This is what Nigerians are enduring because of poor electricity supply.

Although electricity is not new to Nigeria, this year alone the national grid has collapsed 10 times since January.

This is one of the worst situations Nigeria has seen in many years.

On Tuesday, Nigerians are once again facing a power outage due to the collapse of the national power grid.

In the month of October alone, the network went down three times in a week, causing a power outage and causing Nigerians to react.

For 10 days, more than a third of the country’s 36 states were in darkness due to a major failure in the transportation network.

Ms Chidinma Emeneka is one of millions of people regularly affected by grid collapse – and now she is struggling to maintain her business.

A 27-year-old woman told the BBC that her business had started relying on no-cost generators to keep it running after she had been without lights for about six weeks.

“My meter is bad, the platform to request a new meter is down, no way to get a new meter and no way to get light.”

At that time, the whole neighborhood didn’t even have light for a week due to the collapse of the national grid.

Businesses like frozen food sellers have lost thousands of dollars – because of frozen foods, including frozen fish, chicken and turkey that aren’t rotten.

What is the reason why power is wahala for Nigeria?

Many experts believe that old equipment, small capacity and poor maintenance affect the power grid and lose light for transportation.

GENCO board member Heather Onoah says the lack of transportation facilities is one of the main problems causing the network to collapse.

“We don’t have enough transmission facilities, nor a network that will carry this energy with them,” she added.

“So sometimes the power even flows back into the system, which causes everything to disperse.”

To end electric power in Nigeria, experts say Nigeria needs to modernize and repair parts of the electricity system and start using modern methods, especially like solar energy and other alternative sources of power electric.

An expert, John Adebayo, an electrical engineer, said it was important to explore different ways to help improve lighting in Nigeria.

“A lasting solution for Nigeria, which can even extend the reach of ODA countries.”

I add: “The power solution is simple, requires us to use a hybrid style, fix all the bad equipment in the way that carries light consumers and create a hybrid system. »

Anoda expert, Victoria Ibrahim, a renewable energy specialist, told the BBC that if Nigeria used solar or hydroelectric power with proper work, it would be a change in electricity for the country.

“If we try things like decentralization, let’s use renewable energy from waste, small hydro or solar power with suitable works,” she said.

She adds: “Some of these methods give us the reliable and stable energy we need for Nigeria.”
