Edinburgh Cowgate victim named by police after being decapitated in horror fell under bus

A pensioner who was decapitated following a late-night horror crash in Edinburgh has been named by police.

Michael Leneghen, 74, was killed in the tragic accident in the capital’s Cowgate on Saturday evening around 7:25 p.m.

OAP, a native of the city, suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the accident.

It is believed he fell onto the road and was struck by a bus that left him decapitated.

His family released a statement which read: “We would like to thank all members of the public and emergency services involved.

“We now ask for privacy at this time.”

Police closed several roads in the area to allow police to conduct their investigation.

And venues in the area were ordered to close immediately after what was initially described as a “road incident”.

Forensic scientists were on site Saturday evening, with a tent set up in the middle of the street.

Halloween revelers in Cowgate were forced to curtail their party following the tragedy.

A partygoer drinking at Supercube karaoke bar claimed he was told to evacuate after a man’s head was discovered just meters away.

They added: “I was at Supercube karaoke bar with friends when we were rushed out and told to evacuate.

“We were told a serious incident had taken place, but police would not give further details.

“Someone said the bouncer had a picture of a human head just ten feet from the bar door.”

Police had previously urged people to avoid sharing images and videos of the incident posted online.

Officers confirmed the investigation was still ongoing and spoke to a number of people who were in the area at the time.

They urged anyone with information to contact us.

Sergeant Paul Ewing, of the Edinburgh Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with Michael’s family and friends, and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“Our investigations remain ongoing. We have already spoken to a number of people who were there at the time and work is underway to check public and private CCTV footage.

“We are still keen to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to police. If you have any information about what happened, please do not hesitate to contact us.

“Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101. Please quote incident number 3395 of Saturday 2 November 2024.”
