Green Bay school board to vote on contract extension for interim superintendent Bayer

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay school board is scheduled to vote Monday on whether to extend interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer’s contract through the 2025-2026 school year.

If the board votes yes, it will begin contract negotiations with Bayer. The board will vote on a 2025-2026 superintendent contract at its Nov. 25 meeting, pushing back the process of hiring a new superintendent until next fall.

By keeping Bayer at the helm of the district for another year, the board hopes to maintain district stability while developing a new strategic plan, finalizing referendum plans for 2022 and 2024 and finalizing its school closure plan, according to a press release.

School closures will not be completely finished until the start of the 2026-27 school year. And given that the 2022 referendum projects are still underway, it is unlikely that the 2024 projects – for which funding was just approved on November 5 – will be fully completed within a year and a half.

The district finalized a job description for the superintendent on Oct. 28. The proposed version of this description includes a provision that the new superintendent would stay on for 24 months.

Bayer said in September that she would not want the superintendent position long-term, largely because of the stress of the job. However, she also said she would serve as interim superintendent for as long as the board needs her.
