Greater Jacksonville Fair opens with new thrills and great eats

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Strong sensations. Good dishes. Fun fun… There’s something for everyone at the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair.

The opening night took place on Thursday and the visitors were in full force.

Tracy Scott and Zepora Merritt were enjoying a date night at the fair.

“We’re enjoying it. Yeah, we just had full bellies. I can tell you that before, now. No, nothing else to eat at the moment,” Scott said.

Scott said he enjoys a Philly cheesesteak and fries as his go-to meal.

Merritt, meanwhile, was loading up on cheese fries.

It’s not a fair without fun activities for children to do as well. Lisa Thomas, marketing director for the Jacksonville Fair, said this year they brought in Degler Attractions to manage the fair’s rides.

“Degler has, if not the best, I would say the best,” Thomas said. “I would say the best kids are coming up. So there are lots of things for children to do, but we also have the children’s zone, which is next to our exhibition center, and which is also a lot of fun.

Then there are the sea lions. Ivo Silva spoke about the Sea Lion Splash exhibition.

“We’re so excited to be here. I can’t wait to see everyone come see the show,” Silva said. “You can take a photo with them right after the show. As if they were doing the same thing. You just approach the stage. They kiss you.

The fair will have two more years in downtown Jacksonville. In 2026, it will move westward.

“We need a lot more space to do a lot more things. We’re going to build an amphitheater there, so we’re going to be music-centric,” Thomas said. “We’ll still have a fair, but we’re going to be able to host a lot of great national artists at the fair with this very large, beautiful, new amphitheater.”

The fair is in town until November 17.
