iOS 18 has some great features, but these 3 are super boring

I was a iPhone user since Apple launched the very first model in 2007and I currently own the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Needless to say, I’m a huge iPhone fan.

But nothing is perfect, especially when it comes to iOS, the mobile operating software that powers the iPhone. With every new release, there are always a few features or settings that I don’t like, and that’s true with the recent version of iOS 18.

There’s a lot to like about iOS 18 – I’m a big fan of the new one RCS supportwhich greatly improves text messaging with Android users. I like that I can also send Satellite SMS when I don’t have cell service. And I’m really happy to finally be able to swap the two lock screen buttons (which frankly, we should have been able to do a while ago).

But there are also things I hate, as always. (I’m looking at you, new Control Center.) Here are my three least favorite new features in iOS 18, and how you can sort of fix them.

Get rid of all the clutter in the Photos app on iOS 18

OK, I’ll say it bluntly, I really don’t like the overhaul Apple made to the Photos app in iOS 18. I understand what that means, but it seems terribly cluttered by default. I don’t want my primary Camera Roll to constantly remind me of vacations or wallpaper suggestions with photos and videos I’m not looking for.

Fortunately, Apple gives you the ability to customize the Photos app to your liking.

When you first open the Photos app, you’ll see a grid of all your photos and videos, which is the library view you’re used to, but at the bottom you’ll notice that the navigation bar is gone. and instead replaced with collections of photos and videos you recently took and have with your friends, family, and pets.

If you swipe down, you will continue to see random collections and albums, like pinned collections, shared albums, memories, travel, featured photos and wallpaper suggestions, which were all in the Albums and For You tabs. Now they are all in one place on iOS 18, which is the main view. And while this may be helpful to some, I don’t need to see everything at once. I just want to see my camera roll and some albums.

To customize the Photos app, swipe down and tap Customize and rearrange. Here you can uncheck any collections you want to hide from the main view. You can also arrange the order in which they appear. I don’t want wallpaper suggestions or most of the other options, so I unchecked everything except Mr.Media Types (organizes your media into videos, live photos, etc.) and Utilities (hidden albums, recently deleted, receipts, documents, etc.).

You can delete or keep as many collections and albums as you want, but for me the fewer the better.

Of course, you will no longer be able to see the collections that Apple created for you, as well as several other albums, but if you don’t use them, it’s better that way, because you can always find any photo or video of your choice by browsing your camera roll or using the search button at the top.

Remove all new pages from Control Center on iOS 18

I use Control Center all the time to quickly connect to Wi-FI, enable Do Not Disturb, enable dark mode or low battery mode, and discover new songs with the music recognition control. However, with iOS 18, Apple has expanded the design of Control Center and it now has multiple pages of controls, some pre-made and others you can create yourself.

The thing is, I don’t need multiple Control Center pages – I just need one. I don’t want the clutter of multiple pages, because I can place all the controls I need on a single page. But that’s not the only problem. I also find that when I now try to exit the Control Center, I end up accidentally scrolling through the Control Center pages, and thus I get stuck… and annoyed.

Above you can see the normal Control Center (LEFT) and the new pages (middle and right).

Luckily, there’s an easy way to get Control Center back to how it was, with just one page.

In Control Center, which you can access by swiping down from the upper right corner of your screen, swipe up to access additional pages, and tap your finger on any empty part of the page . This will highlight the control: press the Delete Control (-) button at the top left to delete the control and the page.

Do this for any other additional Control Center pages you have, until you only have the main Control Center.

Once you remove the extra pages from Control Center, you will no longer see the page icons in the center left.

Now, when you try to exit the Control Center, you will no longer get stuck in other pages. Instead, you will easily be able to exit like before.

Stop accidentally triggering the new Siri on iOS 18.1 (public users and beta developers only)

The big AI upgrade to Siri that everyone has been waiting for won’t come out until next year, but if you’re using the public (or developer) beta of iOS 18.1 (here’s a complete guide on how to download) and have a iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligenceyou probably noticed that Siri turned on.

Instead of the Siri orb you’re used to, the edges of your iPhone screen glow different colors when the assistant listens to you. It’s a welcome design change, even if Siri still doesn’t have the expected Apple Intelligence features, but one aspect of the new Siri continues to annoy me.

If you double-tap the bottom center of your iPhone, the Type to Siri feature appears. This lets you type, instead of speaking, with Siri, bringing up a keyboard at the bottom of your screen. It’s a useful feature if you’re in a situation where you need to be discreet, but I always seem to activate the feature by accident, especially when I’m tapping or swiping my phone.

There is, however, a way to disable Type to Siri, without completely disabling the assistant. In Settingsgo to Apple Intelligence and Siri > Speak and type with Siri and deactivate Tap on Siri.
