Brush fire breaks out in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park as northeast drought continues

A brush fire broke out Friday evening in Prospect Park, in the Brooklyn borough of New York, amid a drought that has plagued the northeastern United States for weeks.

The New York City Fire Department posted about the fire on around 8 p.m. and said “operations are underway.” Soon after, units were using drone technology to find hot spots.

It was not immediately clear what started the fire. NBCNew York said there were no injuries.

Eric Adams, Mayor of New York said in an X post on Friday that his office was monitoring the fire and that the FDNY, New York Emergency Management and the New York Department of Parks and Recreation were on scene.

Adams went to the fire scene to assess the situation Friday evening.

The latest fire occurs in the middle of a Several weeks of drought in the northeastcaused by dry and unseasonably warm conditions. A number of fires have broken out in New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and windy conditions are increasing the fire risk in the region.

On Thursday, “temperatures rose well above normal values,” said the Office of the National Weather Service in New York said. A cooling forecast to begin Friday evening is expected to bring temperatures back to “completely normal” SATURDAY.

The FDNY said Friday that New York City was subject to a drought monitoring “due to a historic lack of precipitation.”

October was one of the driest months on record in the United States, particularly in the Northeast, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Cities like Philadelphia; Newark, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and Norfolk, Virginia, recorded no rain that month, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Centerwhich collects precipitation data from more than 1,400 weather stations across the country.

The entire New York City region was under a red flag Friday, the weather service said, with wind gusts up to 30 mph. The service warned that “fires could start and spread quickly” and “avoid any outdoor burning.”

THE The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services said “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels will significantly increase the potential for fire growth.”

Adams urged New Yorkers to “remain vigilant” and call 911 in the event of a fire.

“Any sparking fire will spread quickly under these conditions,” Adams said.

Prospect Park is located between the Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Flatbush and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods in Brooklyn and has a zoo and ice rink on its 526 acres.
