New York Yankees express interest in Elite Closer

Strengthening their enclosure must be one of the goals New York Yankees the biggest priorities this offseason; if only because they lose three of their best relievers (Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle and Tim Hill) to free agency.

Luke Weaver has done more than enough to be the Yankees’ closer in 2025. However, New York fans have a right to worry about whether Weaver can repeat the 2.89 ERA he has produced during the 2024 regular season (and his 1.76 ERA in the postseason), considering he has a 4.85 ERA throughout his MLB career.

A large part of this success is certainly due due to mechanical changes (eliminating his leg kick to use more of a sliding pitch and changing the grip for his four-seam fastball) this past offseason. Either way, the Yankees would do well to add another top reliever this winter.

And Jon Morosi of MLB.com revealed that the Yankees are already targeting a free agent pitcher.

“Carlos Estévez is among (many) free agent relievers the Yankees are interested in early this offseason,” Morosi wrote. on.

This is not the first time that Estévez is Yankees-relatedas MLB.com senior insider Mark Feinsand listed him as a potential candidate for New York in a Article from October 21.

“Estévez had a 2.45 ERA and 26 saves between the Angels and Phillies in 2024, posting a WHIP under 1,000 in 55 innings. He showed the ability to close out or work as a setup man, but he should be one of the most coveted players on the market this offseason,” Feinsand wrote.

There will likely be a big market for Estévez this winter. But if the Yankees manage to sign him, it would be a good start for their “off-season shopping list”.
