3 stats that defined Toronto’s victory over Montreal in the Eastern Final

MONTREAL — The Toronto Argonauts overcame adversity to qualify for the 111th Gray Cup with a victory against the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday.

The Argos had to overcome turnovers, an injury to their starting quarterback and a late surge from the Alouettes to earn a 30-28 victory in the Eastern final.

Toronto scored two non-offensive touchdowns, caused six turnovers and sacked the quarterback four times to punch their ticket to Vancouver. Running back Ka’Deem Carey added 92 yards on 12 carries and receiver Damonte Coxie caught five passes for 105 yards and a major as the two focal points of the Argos’ offense.

71 YARD TD – MAJOR RETURN OF JANARION GRANT

The Boatmen struggled to add points on offense all afternoon, but received a big boost from their special teams unit when Janarion Scholarship recovered a punt 71 yards for seven scores late in the first half.

The score cut Montreal’s lead to two points (16-14) and shifted the momentum in favor of the visitors.

SIX – REVIEWS FORCED BY THE TORONTO DEFENSE

Toronto’s defense was the story of the game, causing six total turnovers, scoring on a pick-six and sacking Cody Fajardo four times.

Defensive back Benjamin Franklin recovered two balls, taking one to the opposing end zone to add seven more points for the Double Blue. Linebacker Wynton McManis added two forced fumbles to complete a dominant defensive effort for the Argonauts.

73 – PASSING COURSE FOR NICK ARBUCKLE

This may not seem like an impressive stat at first glance, but the backup pivot Nick Arbuckle entered the game in a high-pressure situation after starter Chad Kelly was injured. The substitute then guided the Argos to a field goal that extended the lead to eight points, before adding a possession late in the game after the Alouettes cut the lead to two points.

Arbuckle’s performance was crucial in freezing the game and preventing the Alouettes from coming back strong to win the match.
