Two hunters shot on first day of Minnesota gun season – Twin Cities

CLAY COUNTY, Minn. — Sheriff’s departments in Clay and Norman counties are investigating separate hunting accidents that occurred on the opening day of Minnesota’s deer firearms season.

Shortly before 8 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to reports that a man had been struck by gunfire while hunting near the 4600 block of 90th Avenue North, a few kilometers to the southeast of Kragnes, Minnesota, in Clay County.

Officers arrived to find a man who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Clay County deputies and a Minnesota State Trooper immediately began administering first aid to the hunter.

When asked if the injuries appeared to come from the victim’s hunting party or another hunter, Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting said more information would be released after the weekend.

The Sanford Ambulance Service arrived and took over the rescue efforts. Sanford Airmed was requested and its personnel assisted Sanford Ambulance and law enforcement in their rescue efforts.

The man, a 34-year-old from Dilworth, was transported to Sanford Hospital by Airmed. Empting told WDAY-TV he had no word on the man’s condition as of Saturday afternoon, but described the injuries as serious.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 11 a.m., Norman County deputies were called to an area north of Perley for a 37-year-old hunter who had been shot.

The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, to be treated for a single gunshot wound.

Norman County Sheriff Ben Fall described the injury as not life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and no further information will be released at this time, Fall said.
