NEW DELHI: Canada Brampton Triveni Mandir and the community center canceled a certificate of life event scheduled for Nov. 17, citing concerns about possible violent protests.
The event, a consular camp, was aimed at helping Hindus and Sikhs of Indian origin renew their essential life certificates, a requirement for various official purposes.
The temple administration issued an official statement on Monday detailing the reasons for the cancellation. “Please note that the Certificate of Life event scheduled at the Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024 has been canceled. This is due to official intelligence from Peel Regional Police, indicating that there is a threat level extremely high and imminent violent demonstrations,” the statement said.
Temple authorities expressed their regrets to the community, many of whom depend on these consular services. “We apologize to everyone in the community who depended on the event. We are deeply saddened that Canadians now do not feel safe coming to Hindu temples in Canada,” the statement added.
The administration also urged Peel police to take stronger action against threats targeting the Hindu community and ensure the safety of all Canadian citizens, regardless of their religion.

Statement from the Brampton Temple

Canada’s Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah has written to the Brampton Triveni Mandir & Community Centre, asking them to consider postponing the next consular camp on November 17. “We believe that a temporary postponement could significantly help defuse the situation. current tensions and preserve the well-being of those who go there,” the letter reads.
Brampton Triveni Mandir serves as a community center for Hindus and like-minded people, hosting gatherings for worship, religious discourses and community service activities. However, in recent weeks the temple has faced increased tensions following incidents nearby.
This comes after an Indian consular camp at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton was violently disrupted on November 3. Following this, the Indian Consulate General in Toronto announced the cancellation of several planned consular camps across Canada after local security agencies indicated they were unable to do so. ensure the required security measures for these community events.
The attack on the Hindu temple sparked a strong reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who condemned the “deliberate attack” on social media. In his message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said, “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats are equally appalling. Such acts of violence never weaken India’s resolve. expect the Canadian government to guarantee justice and uphold the rule of law.
This comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations last year of “potential” involvement of Indian agents in Hardeep’s assassination Singh Nijjar, supporter of Khalistan.
These claims, categorically denied by India, led to the expulsion of Canadian diplomats from India and strained bilateral relations, with New Delhi insisting that Canada gave space to pro-Khalistan elements.
