From Nuts to Berries to Tomatoes: Know the Foods That May Help Fight Cancer and Support Brain Health | Health

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in recent times. Diagnostic and treatment trials can take a toll on a patient’s health and mind. However, with the right nutrients, diet and lifestyle changes, we can fight cancer and promote brain health for a healthier life. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Praveen Gupta, Senior Director and Head of Neurology Department, Fortis Hospital, said, “Fruits and vegetables constitute the major part of the diet supporting the fight against cancer. They are rich in anti-cancer elements and the more colorful they are, the higher the concentration of nutrients. Eat a variety of vegetables, especially dark green, red and orange vegetables.

Dr. Praveen Gupta further noted five foods that can fight cancer:

Berries are rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Their concentration of antioxidants may help slow the formation of cancer and prevent cognitive decline. They may also benefit from immune therapy for cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables:

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower and kale, offer essential elements including vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese, which have anti-cancer and neuroprotective qualities. They also contain sulforaphane, a plant chemical that has anti-cancer effects.

Tomatoes:

Several studies have linked tomato consumption to a lower risk of many cancers, including prostate cancer. The lycopene in tomatoes is also beneficial for brain function. Processed tomato products such as juice, sauce or paste have increased cancer-fighting potential.

Legumes, such as beans, peas, peanuts, tamarind, alfalfa, clover and lentils, are high in fiber, which may reduce the risk of certain cancers.

All nuts are good for brain health and have cancer prevention features. Walnuts are rich in nutrients that may help prevent breast cancer. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, both essential for preventing cognitive decline, thereby improving brain health.
