Nicky Lopez, another member of the Chicago White Sox 2024 free agency elect

The Chicago White Sox recently hired former Texas Rangers manager Will Venable as their new manager, and the team now has an instant job to do on its roster. Chicago went 41-121 last season, posting the worst record in the modern era. They last made the playoffs in the 2021 season and appear to have a massive rebuild ahead of them.

The 40-man roster is down to 36 after a series of moves Tuesday.

According to the team on social media:

The #WhiteSox announced that infielder Nicky Lopez and left-handed pitcher Sammy Peralta had cleared waivers and elected free agency instead of accepting outright assignments.

Lopez, 29, came from the Atlanta Braves last offseason in a trade for reliever Aaron Bummer and had 398 at-bats for Chicago. During that span, he hit .241 with one home run and 21 RBIs. Known as a strong runner, he stole 22 bases for the 2021 Royals. He spent six years in the big leagues with the Royals, Braves and White Sox.

Lifetime, he is a .248 hitter with seven career home runs.

Peralta, 26, spent parts of two seasons in the big leagues, both with the White Sox. He is 2-0 in 25 career games and has a 4.37 ERA.

Chicago Players will have plenty of opportunities to make an impression in 2025. Since they won’t be competing, they will have the opportunity to face guys looking for a second chance. Hopefully they can strike gold in this department, like they did last season with Erick Fedde and Paul Dejong.
