Dacia Duster vs MG ZS: which is the best economical hybrid SUV?

Price and operation
Both cars return around 55 mph on the WLTP cycle, but in the real world it was the Dacia that proved most capable of approaching that figure, achieving 52.3 mpg compared to 48.7 mpg for the MG. Both cars cost a similar amount with hybrid powertrains on board, but the MG has more standard kit and higher performance. However, Duster buyers can save an extra £3,000 and choose the mild hybrid petrol instead.

Practicality
There’s not much that separates this pair when it comes to interior or storage space – both are impressive. The Duster offers rear passengers a bit more headroom, but the ZS has more generous knee room. Both have similar trunk volume, but non-hybrid Dusters offer more underfloor storage and better cabin storage. The MG does, however, have a lower boot lip to make loading easier.

Security
Systems like lane departure warning and a driver fatigue warning system are fitted as standard on the Duster, with blind spot warning available on the Journey and Extreme trims, but despite this, a three star . EuroNCAP the rating is a little disappointing. Adaptive cruise control is standard on both trim levels of the MG ZS, as are blind-spot warning, lane departure assist and an active emergency braking system.

Possession
Both cars are built to a price, but Dacia’s bean counters have chosen their battles better. MG tried to give a veneer of luxury that meant skimping on some basics; there’s no steering wheel reach adjustment and the faux leather is slippery. The Dacia is more upfront about its savings when it comes to hard plastics inside, but its ergonomics seem better taken into account.

Verdict

First place: Dacia Duster

Dacia may claim to be gradually moving away from its purely budgetary origins, but the Duster remains an inexpensive family SUV. However, he has more character than ever; it has a unique look, is tough on the road, but offers comfort that sets it apart from most of its competitors.
