Viral ‘gross’ food trend is confusing – but it’s making Gen Z swoon: ‘I’m impressed’

Another day, another food trend.

TikTok has given rise to a bizarre new snack fad that might turn your stomach.

Dried yogurt — which involves removing the liquid from regular yogurt, resulting in a firmer, powderier product — has taken over the internet, as well as people’s refrigerators.

On TikTok, the hashtag #dry yogurt has been used on hundreds of posts, in which creators use food coloring to give their dried yogurt bright colors or reuse cookie cutters to transform their dried yogurt into different shapes.

“I don’t know if I like the thickness” influencer Michelle Brown » proclaimed in a viral TikTok video from his experience with dried yogurt, with his series of clips accumulating millions of views online.

She compared the consistency to icing, saying yogurt “sticks to every part of your mouth.”

The concoction – inspired by the Middle Eastern spread called labne — is prepared by putting the desired amount of natural yogurt in cheesecloth or a paper towel, removing the moisture and placing it in the refrigerator for 48 hours.

While TikTokkers claimed they would “hate the texture” and called the “raw» creation “dehydrated slime”, other gourmands were pleasantly surprised by the taste.

“I’m impressed,” designer Kelita Rosita said in a video.

“The texture literally looks like softened butter” described a designer named Linda.

“This is really good,” said another user named Kyle Ciaruriwho topped her bowl of dried yogurt with fruit, chocolate and a wafer, comparing it to the texture of cream cheese.

It’s not the first time social networks sparked a controversial food trend.

Earlier this year, TikTokkers Kit Kat bars slathered with ketchup, created cucumber concoctions, eaten fried toothpicks and devoured ice cream drizzled with olive oil.
