SIRT concludes investigation into injuries caused by Saskatoon police

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has concluded its investigation into an injury sustained during an arrest by the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) last year.

On the morning of November 9, 2023, the incident began with a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle on East Spadina Crescent. The prolonged high-speed incident ended when the stolen vehicle went over a steep embankment and came to rest in a wooded area near the river bank.

The driver of the car, aged 37, then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot towards the river. After a brief chase, the suspect was arrested by police.

SIRT indicates that during the arrest, the suspect and several officers fell from a second embankment. The man was eventually taken into custody by the police and transferred to the SPS detention center.

“While in custody, the man complained of pain and was transported to the hospital where it was determined he had suffered an injury,” the SIRT report states.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on November 9, SIRT was informed of the incident.

After a year now, the SIRT concludes its investigation. The independent, civilian-led unit that investigates serious incidents involving police officers in Saskatchewan says its investigation included interviewing the person involved, seven SPS officers and reviewing medical records.

“The person involved described both their arrest and the injuries they suffered, and confirmed to investigators that they had used methamphetamine prior to the incident. The affected individual provided written consent to SIRT investigators to access his or her medical records related to the injury sustained during the incident,” the SIRT report states.

The SIRT concluded that there was no reason to believe that any police officer had committed an offence. Therefore, no referral will be made to the Attorney General of Saskatchewan.
