Vancouver police make arrest at home linked to designated terrorist group

Vancouver police say one person was arrested as part of a hate crime investigation after a search warrant was executed at a home in the 1800 block of 1st Avenue East, near from Victoria Drive.

That person, who police have not identified, has now been released pending the completion of the investigation, according to VPD spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison.

CBC has confirmed that this is the home of Charlotte Lynne Kates, director of the Palestinian prisoner solidarity network Samidoun.

Last month, the Canadian government designated Samidoun as a terrorist entity in joint action with the United States

Kates was arrested and released by the VPD in May after a video of a rally was posted on social media showing her praising the Hamas attack on Israel and calling a number of terrorist organizations heroes.

Speech at pro-Palestinian protest opens hate crime investigation

Charlotte Kates gave a speech in support of Hamas at a rally outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on April 26. Released video of the event has since led to a hate crime investigation by Vancouver police and an arrest.

According to a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous, the VPD broke a window of Kates’ home after arriving with an armored vehicle and officers in full tactical gear.

“It was scary for all of us,” the neighbor said.

Another neighbor said they were awakened by a loud bang around 9 a.m. and then saw police at the back of Kates’ house, where she said two people lived.

“I’ve lived next to them for three years and they are absolutely lovely people. They just fight for people’s rights,” said Darian Tourand. “I don’t think they are dangerous or terrorists in any way.”

Franco Sabellico lives in the same building in the Commercial Drive neighborhood.

“I’m worried about the neighborhood and the community,” he said. “The fact that we can have…people associated with terrorist groups living next door to you is very alarming.”

Samidoun maintains close ties with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), listed as a terrorist entity in Canada, the United States and the European Union.

Addison said the VPD Major Crimes Unit and Emergency Response Team attended the home and the person in question is under investigation under Section 319 of the Criminal Code , which deals with public incitement to hatred.
