When will Dallas-Fort Worth experience its first frost?

It may soon be time to take out the winter coats.

After a unusually hot for the season As fall begins, Dallas’ first frost looms on the horizon. The National Weather Service In Fort Worth, there is a 25% chance the temperature will drop to 32 degrees on Friday, November 22. For outlying areas, including Denton and Decatur, there is a 40% chance a freeze will occur.

If the region experiences a freeze next Friday, it would be exactly as expected. The first average frost hits North Texas on Nov. 22, said David Bonnette, a meteorologist with the weather service.

However, it is not an exact science. The first frost on record occurred in 1898, on October 22, according to weather service data. The last first frost of a season did not arrive until January 4, 1972.

On average, the region records 29 days with freezing temperatures. But in 1977-78, North Texas experienced 62 days of freezing temperatures. In 2016-2017, we only recorded 11 freezes.

To prepare freezing temperaturesthe weather service suggests bringing in cold-sensitive plants, taking steps to prevent water pipes from freezing and bringing pets indoors.

The freezing temperatures won’t last too long. The last frosts of the season occur in mid-March, although they were recorded until mid-April.
