Des Moines man gets probation in deadly drag race

A Des Moines man received probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with a motorcycle crash in April of this year.

Ryan Leory Gile, 33, of Des Moines, was given a two-year suspended prison sentence Thursday for the death of Des Moines resident Mitchell Ohland, 41. Ohland died in a motorcycle accident on April 7 after hitting the side of another vehicle.

Des Moines police said in a May press release this evidence indicated that Gile was drag racing his motorcycle with Ohland at the time of the accident. Both drivers’ speeds reached up to 70 mph.

Gile was initially charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving while suspended, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to provide proof of financial responsibility. Court records indicate both homicide charges were amended to involuntary manslaughter.

Gile consented to be sentenced without a hearing.

His sentence will follow sentences for domestic violence and malicious prosecution charges in other cases. He received a total of six years in prison, suspended, meaning Gile will avoid prison and instead serve probation.

Gile is also ordered to pay a to-be-determined amount of damages and enroll in DMACC’s Victim Impact Awareness Program.

No victim impact statement was submitted for sentencing.
