The matter came to light on November 11, following which an investigative committee was formed by the KGMU.

“A meeting of the investigation committee was held today at 2 p.m. As per the decision, Dr Ramesh Kumar, senior resident of the ENT department, has been dismissed from the university,” read an order from the KGMU medical superintendent’s office.

According to the family’s complaint to the police, the woman was brought to KGMU in September with a throat problem. Hailing from Lakhimpur district, the woman, Poonam Maurya, 32, an ASHA employee, was to be operated on at KGMU, but the family was reportedly persuaded to get the operation done at a private facility.

The patient was admitted to a private hospital on October 25, but after the operation, her condition deteriorated and had to be transferred from the private hospital and admitted to the ventilation unit of KGMU.
