Larne: What next for the Irish Premiership champions after the departure of Tiernan Lynch?

Given the prospect of domestic and European football as well as the opportunity to work with a team full-time, Larne’s position is obviously attractive.

Former boss of Carrick Rangers and Glentoran Gary Haveronone of Lynch’s coaches, takes over as interim manager alongside Andrew Mitchell.

Haveron spent three years as Carrick manager, but lasted just 17 months at the Glens before joining Lynch’s coaching staff in April 2023.

If he impresses and for the sake of continuity, he could land the job permanently.

Looking around the league, Rodney McAree And Jim Magilton are two managers who have achieved success while playing an attractive style of football.

McAree transformed the Swifts from relegation candidates into top six challengers in his second spell in charge of the club, while Magilton led Cliftonville to their first Irish Cup in 45 years last season and retained their title for long periods of this campaign.

Looking further ahead, the former Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley could take his first steps in senior management if he gets the job.

McAuley is currently the manager of the Northern Ireland Under-19s and prepares for their final Euro 2025 Under-19 qualifier against Albania on Tuesday.

Former Linfield striker Andy Waterworth, who took interim responsibility for the Northern Ireland women’s senior team in 2023 could also be an option.

Waterworth currently works as Head of Elite Player Development at the Football Association of Ireland.

Those will be big shoes to fill for whoever lands the job after seven superb years under Lynch.
