Media Advisory: Johns Hopkins Medicine’s A Woman’s Journey Welcomes 30th Anniversary of Health Education Program

WHAT: A woman’s journey will host its 30th annual in-person event in November, with Johns Hopkins medicine experts sharing the latest medical and health care advances on many topics. Johns Hopkins doctors will discuss their knowledge about osteoporosis, the gut microbiome, brain health and more in breakout sessions. This event is designed to educate women about health issues to help them improve the health and well-being of themselves and their families.

This event will also feature several special speakers, including April Simpkins (author, National Alliance on Mental Illness Ambassador, and 988 Helpline Partner), who will speak about the loss of her daughter, Miss USA 2019, and increased awareness of mental illness. In a closing session, Johns Hopkins radiologist Elliot Fishman, MDwill discuss the role of artificial intelligence in early diagnosis of diseases. Kelly Geer Ripken, National President of A woman’s journeyand Redonda Miller, MD, MBA, president of Johns Hopkins Hospital, will also speak at the event.

Breakout sessions led by Johns Hopkins experts will cover the following medical topics.

PRESENTATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Marisa Clifton, MDwill discuss the causes and underlying symptoms of urinary tract infections, which are the most common infections among American women, as well as treatment options and pelvic health practices.
  • Charlene Gamaldo, MDwill discuss the sleep disorders that women often experience, their relationship with other illnesses and new treatments for getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Dimitrios Kapogiannis, MDwill share the impact of weight on brain health and the effectiveness of intermittent fasting in reducing risk.
  • Sabra Lewsey, MD, MPHwill discuss the latest evidence on heart disease in women, which is the leading cause of death among American women, and ways to improve heart health.
  • Myriam Lucia Vega Gonzalez, MD, MPHwill review unique skin characteristics that affect women of color, such as excessive scarring, rosacea, and melanin changes.
  • Kendall Moseley, MDwill share what science is currently revealing about osteoporosis and the progress being made in combating the cause of falls and fractures in women.
  • Jessica Queen, MD, PhDwill explain the relationship between the gut microbiome and immune health and diseases, such as colon cancer.
  • Wen Shen, MDwill talk about the complications of estrogen loss during menopause, including heart disease, osteoporosis, memory loss and other conditions that affect an average of one-third of a woman’s life expectancy.
