GDE will not release Pretoria Girls’ High School racism report due to private content

PRETORIA — Gauteng Department of Education’s refusal to release Pretoria High School for Girls’ report on racism at school encountered resistance.

GDE will not publish a report

According to Eyewitness Newsthe ministry said it would not release the full report because it contains private content. The ministry earlier revealed that white members of the school staff were involved in racist behavior. The school chose to take the matter to the High Court.

The MEC for EducationMatome Chiloane, said the Protection of Personal Information Act requires the ministry to protect witnesses, their names and contact details involved in the racist row at the Pretoria Girls’ High School. He said the ministry could release an edited version of the report. The director was placed a three-month suspension in July 2024.

Internet users do not agree with GDE

South Africans comment @ewnupdates tweet were not happy with the decision.

“The GDE needs to understand that they also have a responsibility to students. It’s truly demoralizing for a young black child to see this. Our children are still dealing with racist tendencies.”

Pretoria Girls’ High School students suspended

In a related article, In brief News reported that 12 learners were suspended after being accused of racism.

The learners allegedly had a WhatsApp group where they shared racist sentiments.
