UFL plans to expand into new markets

During the NFL season, it’s hard to pay much attention to other football leagues. Sometimes news from a non-NFL league grabs our attention.

On Monday, the UFL announced that it was accepting proposals from potential markets.

“As the UFL lays the groundwork for future growth, we are excited to begin exploring new expansion markets, where spring football can not only live, but thrive,” said UFL President and CEO the UFL, Russ Brandon, in a press release. “These expansion efforts validate our vision and early success, demonstrating how spring football resonates with fans and reinforcing our commitment to expanding its reach.” With the strength and structure of our ownership group, as well as our media partners, we are well positioned for the long term and look forward to identifying communities that have the potential and desire to host a team UFL.

The UFL will consider existing sports culture, fan interest, geography, population and available venues.

The spring league, created in 2023 by the merger of the XFL and USFL, currently operates in eight markets: Arlington, Birmingham, Michigan, Houston, Memphis, San Antonio, St. Louis and DC.

St. Louis is by far the most prosperous market. Although the UFL does not have a presence in California, it might be wise to explore two markets that (like St. Louis) the NFL has abandoned: San Diego and Oakland.
