Matrics urged to celebrate safely

Wednesday November 27, 2024

The Western Cape Provincial Government has urged students to celebrate the end of their school journey responsibly and safely, as final matriculation exams get under way today.

The final baccalaureate exams for the class of 2024 will take place today, ending the five-week exam period.

The final exams to be taken are Agricultural Management Practices, Marine Science Paper 2 and Design Paper 1.

“We thank the public for their support of our matrics during this time. This support has helped us ensure that all candidates have the opportunity to take their exams, even in difficult circumstances.

“Once exams are over, a number of learners will attend formal matric rage events and smaller end-of-exam parties. It is understandable that our students want to celebrate the end of their school journey, but we urge them to do so responsibly and safely,” said Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier.

The MEC urged all members attending these and other smaller events to:

  • Familiarize yourself with safety measures at the event itself and relevant local emergency telephone numbers.
  • Always keep a close eye on their valuables.
  • Keep a close eye on their drinks at all times and don’t leave them unattended;
  • Report anything suspicious to the South African Police or event organizers immediately.
  • Avoid driving while intoxicated.
  • Set up a buddy system for their own safety and stay in regular contact with their parents.

“We encourage parents to ensure their children understand the risks involved in any event or party, and to ensure they have made arrangements to stay in touch with their children and know what to do in the event of an emergency ” said Maynier.

The announcement of the national baccalaureate results has been postponed to Monday January 13, 2025, in order to take into account the first day of school.

Individual candidate results will be published in schools and on the Western Cape Department of Education website from 10:00am on Tuesday 14 January 2025.

“We look forward to celebrating with all of our members when the results are released next year,” Maynier said. – SAnews.gov.za
