Virgil van Dijk future to Liverpool is currently uncertain, as he has not yet reached an agreement to extend his contract which expires on June 30 next year and he will be free to foreign clubs from January 1.

Van Dijk was recently asked about a possible move to Real Madrid next summer following the Reds’ impressive 2-0 win over the current Champions League holders at Anfield on Wednesday. He replied: “What a direct question! The guys here (the UK-based journalists) are usually never that direct but look, I can’t say anything (about my future).

“Real Madrid need defenders, don’t they? They have Rudiger. Can I move this summer? The only main goal for me at the moment is Man City, Liverpool. I am fully focused on that and I have nothing else to say about my future.”

Reports emerged earlier this week that Van Dijk has agreed to stay at Anfield with a new contract expected to be signed imminently, but speaking to Viaplay Sport Netherlandsthe 33-year-old confirmed that negotiations were still ongoing.

He said via Transfer sector: “There is no update. So I have nothing to share with you. If you read reports about deals being made or not being made, it’s all false. Of course, there are conversations happening…but right now, I don’t have anything to share.

Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League. A victory over the reigning champions would extend the Reds’ lead at the top of the table to 11 points.
