Liverpool outperform Manchester City as Guardiola’s side remain winless in 7 games

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were on the scoresheet as Liverpool outclassed Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday December 1. This means City’s winless streak has extended to 7 games as they suffered their 6th defeat in the same period. Liverpool would extend their lead over City to 11 points as the Reds dominated Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool were in front from the start as they had City on the ropes and could easily have scored 3 or 4 goals as there was relentless pressure from Arne Slot. A big moment came in the 4th minute when Luis Diaz made a good pivot to send Cody Gakpo away. Ortega made a good save, but the flag was then raised for offside.

Ortega was called into action again when Szoboszlai’s weak shot was stopped after sloppy play by Manuel Akanji in setting up the move. City would have the post to thank in the 12th minute as Virgil van Dijk’s effort bounced off the woodwork. However, the relief was short-lived as Mohamed Salah played a nice pass to Gakpo, who slotted the ball home soon after.

Van Dijk had another golden opportunity in the 19th minute from another corner as City struggled to hold on. Gakpo would have a chance soon after as Liverpool threatened to walk away from the match. City were able to enter the match slowly, but Liverpool continued to dominate the match.

Liverpool had the best chance in the 56th minute to make it 2-0 as Bernardo Silva’s poor pass allowed Salah to run towards Ortega. However, the Egyptian’s shot went well over.

City’s best attempts at trying to put pressure on goal would see the hosts launch continued attacks. One such move saw Salah and Alexander-Arnold almost make it 2-0, but an offside flag was raised.

Mistakes continued to be evident in City’s game as Dias and Walker gave the ball away, forcing Ortega to bring down Luis Diaz in the box. Salah would convert from the spot to more or less seal the points for the Reds.

An error from Van Dijk almost allowed De Bruyne to close the gap, but Kelleher was on hand to make a fine save. Liverpool would increase their lead at the top of the table to 9 points, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea. For Guardiola, he would need to regroup as City face Nottingham Forest at home on December 4 while Liverpool take on Newcastle United away.
