What is listeria? What are the symptoms of a listeria infection?

Listeria is a foodborne bacterial illness that can cause listeriosis, which mainly affects the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and newborns.

Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance and seizures, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or a life-threatening infection of the newborn. In older adults and people with weakened immune systems, infections can sometimes be fatal.

People at higher risk of infection who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food should seek medical attention.

Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
