The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced a QR-based fare payment system in all its 8,941 busesaccording to Deccan Herald.

Launched on November 6 and fully rolled out on November 18, the system has already proven itself, contributing between Rs 30-40 lakh to KSRTC’s daily revenue of Rs 7 crore (excluding Shakti scheme and student pass beneficiaries).

Additionally, KSRTC earns an additional Rs 1.5 crore from 28,000 bookings made through its Anywhere Anytime (Awatar) advanced reservation system.

By the end of FY 2024-25, KSRTC aims for 60-70% of its daily revenue to come from digital and QR payments.

The QR payment system was first introduced on a pilot basis, using smart electronic teller machines (ETMs) to enable UPI payments. As of November 11, all 83 depots were each equipped with five machines, and by November 18, all buses in the fleet were equipped with them.

As of December 3, KSRTC had already collected Rs 4.86 crore through QR-based UPI payments.

KSRTC Managing Director V Anbukumar said all buses in the fleet now accept QR payments and within a year, digital and QR payments are expected to account for a significant share of daily revenue.

The QR system was developed in-house by KSRTC, with EBIXCash providing the service. KSRTC is proud to be one of the few transport companies in India, and the first in Karnataka, to implement such a dynamic QR-based payment system, which does not involve any intermediary fees.
