Gurgaon plans underground pedestrian crossing on MG Road to improve safety |

Underpass expected to ease fears over pedestrian safety on MG Road

Gurgaon: GMDA is all set to examine the feasibility of constructing an underpass on the busy MG Road. The proposed metro, if approved, is likely to pass near Sahara Mall, where there is heavy foot traffic between Chakkarpur village in Chanderlok and DLF 2.
The crossing will provide much-needed relief to commuters traveling to and from the nearby metro station and shopping malls. According to officials, the project is still in its infancy with the GMDA ready to conduct an in-depth feasibility study.
The authority will assess, as part of the study, aspects such as land availability, alignment, potential impact on all stakeholders and existing infrastructure, as well as the financial viability of the project.
“Since the four-lane road is one of the busiest stretches in the city, we are working to improve its pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. The location near Sahara Mall has been identified as a potential location where crossing to level can be built, but it will be finalized only after carrying out the feasibility study. We will soon engage an agency to carry out the study,” said a GMDA official.
MG Road is a key stretch connecting several residential condominiums, colonies, metro stations, malls and commercial establishments. While people use the MG Road Metro station skywalk as a crossing point, many risk commuting on foot in the absence of proper pedestrian infrastructure.
Residents living along the road welcomed the idea and said the area needed better traffic management and infrastructure to keep pedestrians safe.
Ishwar Kewalramani, a resident of DLF-2, said, “There are several commercial establishments, including banks, right across the road, but there is no safe way to cross the road. I often book a taxi or car just to reach a bank. where I could have easily walked if crossing the road was safer. News regarding infrastructure development here is welcome.
Rajeev Sinha, chairman of RWA of Essel Towers, supported the proposal but urged for speedy implementation. “Due to lack of facilities, rampant jaywalking near Sahara Mall is common, increasing the risk of accidents. While this subway is a great idea, projects like these are often delayed. Even the redevelopment of MG Road has been in the works for a long time.”
