The name of Mahindra BE 6e was changed to “BE 6”; Amid ongoing lawsuit with IndiGo

Mahindra, while fighting for the trademark rights in court, has decided to rename the BE 6e as BE 6 and will continue to challenge Indigo for the BE 6e name.

Mahindra BE 6e name changed to BE 6

We recently told you how IndiGo took legal action against Mahindra due to the use of the ‘6E’ moniker for its ‘BE 6e’ electric SUV launching in November 2024. While Mahindra had previously shared its thoughts on IndiGo’s claims, it has now emerged that the Indian automaker has decided to rename its EV from “BE 6e” to “BE 6‘.

The SUV maker also added that it will fight the airline to ensure that Mahindra gets the BE 6e name.

Mahindra issues new statement

The car manufacturer indicates that it has filed an application for trademark registration in class 12 (vehicles) for “BE 6e” as part of its range of electric SUVs. The “BE” brand is already registered with Mahindra in Class 12, and it represents the brand’s “born electric” platform that underpins the BE 6e. InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo airlines, recently raised concerns over Mahindra’s use of the name 6th after the BE tag. The automaker, in return, said its brand was ‘BE 6e’ and not the standalone ‘6E’ – a code used for IndiGo flights.

A statement released by Mahindra said: “We believe it differs fundamentally from IndiGo’s ‘6E’, which represents an airline, thereby eliminating any risk of confusion. The distinct style further highlights its uniqueness. Our registration application concerns an entirely different industry sector and product and therefore sees no conflict. We also find it unseemly that two large Indian multinationals are engaging in an awkward and unnecessary conflict when in fact we should be mutually championing our growth and expansion..”

He further added: “We also find it unseemly that two large Indian multinationals are engaging in an awkward and unnecessary conflict when in fact we should be mutually championing our growth and expansion. We therefore decided to give our product the “BE 6e” mark. We believe, however, that IndiGo’s assertion is baseless and if left unchallenged, will set an unhealthy precedent of monopolization of 2-character alphanumeric trademarks, although our trademark is distinctive and different. This will be extremely restrictive for all businesses, regardless of sectors and sectors. We will therefore continue to vigorously contest it in court and we reserve our right to the BE 6e mark..”

While Mahindra has now rebranded the BE 6e as BE 6, it said it will challenge IndiGo to ensure it gets the BE 6e branding. We will make sure to keep you updated once new details are revealed on this matter.
