Lanzarote and Tenerife have issued a warning after a rare phenomenon hit the Canary Islands. Heavy snowfall in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, has prevented locals from accessing part of the island as we head towards Christmas later this week.

The Cabildo de Tenerife has announced the closure of all access roads to Teide National Park due to unfavorable weather conditions. Accumulating snow and ice on roadways has made driving hazardous, and closures will remain in effect until conditions are deemed safe for travel.

Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo, highlighted the beauty of snow-capped Teide, describing it as a “Christmas present” for the people of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. “This picturesque scene reminds us of the unique charm of the island, but also highlights the importance of preserving its environment and acting responsibly,” she said.

Blanca Pérez, councilor for the natural environment, sustainability, security and emergencies, urged residents and visitors to respect the restrictions. “Our priority is everyone’s safety. It is crucial to follow the guidelines provided by the authorities and avoid unnecessary travel to the area until conditions improve,” she said.

The Cabildo advises British tourists and local residents to avoid traveling to Teide National Park while the closures are in force and to keep informed of road conditions via the Cabildo Road Information Centre. Exercise caution in other parts of the island if bad weather persists, he adds.

And be sure to follow signage and instructions from safety personnel to avoid accidents. “Even though the snow creates a stunning backdrop, safety remains paramount as Tenerife faces the challenges posed by winter conditions,” the Canarian Weekly – an island newspaper – reported this weekend amid the weather change.

It comes at a time when yellow weather warnings for ice and snow have been issued for the UK.
