Sam Darnold’s stellar regular season may not be enough to earn him an extension from the Minnesota Vikings without playoff success, according to a text sent by an NFL player agent to The Athletic. Mike Sando.

“Sam Darnold will be a Viking next year unless he does well in the playoffs,” the agent wrote, according to Sando.

After serving with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers and serving as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers, Darnold recorded his most successful starting campaign in the NFL while developing strong bonds with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in 2024.

Darnold has led the Vikings to a 13-2 start while completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,776 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also added 15 carries for 205 yards and a rushing touchdown.

The Vikings are now on track to potentially land the No. 1 seed in the NFC thanks to their strong season and the Washington Commanders’ surprise Week 16 loss to the Washington Commanders.

If Darnold and the Vikings win against the Green Bay Packers next week and beat the Detroit Lions in Week 18, the team could claim first place in the conference.

That record appears to earn Darnold a raise over the one-year deal he signed in Minnesota ahead of the 2024 season.

But after posting several winning seasons without playoff success behind former QB1 Kirk Cousins, the Vikings could seek assurance that Darnold’s success will translate to the postseason before offering him a longer-term commitment.
