Mom charges family for Christmas dinner and more: ‘It’s so expensive’

One mother said she was hosting Christmas dinner again this year – and this time, she’s charging her family to attend.

Abi Richards, 35, from Hampshire, England, said she spent nearly $300 on food and drinks. this Christmas as she cooks for 10 family members for three days.

She charges them each just under $32 to cover the cost of breakfast, lunch and dinner during those days – Christmas Eve, Christmas and Boxing Day, the latter of which is celebrated in the UK.

Richards shared the news in a video posted on social media – sparking mixed reviews.

“It’s going to be expensive,” she said of the cost associated with all the shopping.

Richards told news agency SWNS that this was the fourth year in a row she had hosted a Christmas dinner at the home.

She said that every year her family “contributes” to the grocery bill.

This year, however, she kept the receipts and “settled the matter fairly” by charging eight of the adults in attendance for their share of the prize. food and drinks.

Richards said it was “easier” to do it this way, so her family wouldn’t have to worry about bringing anything with them for Christmas.

Some on social media praised the plan, while still others called it “disgusting.”

FAMILIES CAN SAVE $100 A MONTH ON FOOD BY DOING THIS: OREGON MOM

Richards lives with her husband and their two children aged 5 and 2.

In addition to her immediate family, Richards feeds her mother, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister, sister’s partner and niece for the holidays.

Richards said she prepares a turkey roast with all the trimmings on Christmas Eve, leftovers with a festive buffet on Christmas and another meal Boxing Day.

In her video, Richards calculated that she spent almost $300 between two stores.

So she did the math and decided to charge adults almost $32 per person.

“I actually don’t think it’s that bad for three days of food,” Richards said.

Diane Gottsman, etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, told Fox News Digital that charging a specific amount “can easily come across as offensive.”

“Don’t give them a specific amount like they’re going to a restaurant,” Gottsman said. “It changes the dynamic of the celebration, and they could all going out to eat instead.”

Richards told SWNS her family was more than happy to contribute. She said they were the ones who “insisted” on doing it from the first year she hosted.

“Every year I give a rough estimate of their contribution,” Richards told SWNS. “I never like to ask for too much or too little. This is the first year I’ve kept receipts and paid them fairly.”

Gottsman said it might be time for Richards to hand over the apron to another member of his family next year.

“If she feels she can’t afford lunch or dinner, then she should let it go welcome next year and offer to help someone else,” Gottsman said.

But Richards told SWNS she doesn’t think it’s a big deal.

“It’s not for everyone, but it’s what has always worked for us.”
