Hong Kong prepares to welcome 380,000 revelers for New Year’s fireworks

Hong Kong will extend the opening hours of two border checkpoints on New Year’s Eve, when 380,000 people are expected to gather in Tsim Sha Tsui for a 12-minute fireworks display and performances by local boy band Mirror and the Canadian duo Crash Adams.

The government said on Friday that the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint would operate 24 hours a day during the celebrations, while the Lo Wu border crossing would remain open until 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Both checkpoints usually close at midnight.

Local bus companies and the railway operator also revealed special transport arrangements, including night bus services to the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint.

According to the Immigration Department, 13.07 million people are expected to enter or leave Hong Kong during the Christmas to New Year holiday period, an average of 1.1 million people per day.

“January 1 is a public holiday on the mainland and in Hong Kong. We believe the number of outbound travelers on that day will increase compared to estimates,” said Ng Yun-ming, commander of the operations section of the Lo Wu section.

The Tourism Office, which is organizing the activities, said that in addition to fireworks, New Year’s Eve would be celebrated with music and dance performances on the observation deck of the Cultural Center, including appearances from Mirror, girl group Collar and Crash Adams.
