Regina organization to leave warming shelter open all winter

Steps are being taken to ensure no one in Regina is left behind this winter.

Carmichael Outreach opens its door all night to provide warming shelter. This time it will be all winter.

Winter is approaching and many people are living in tents throughout the city center. Charlène Netowaysin is worried about them.

“Take our beautiful people, look, listen there, then just put them in a nice roof. because it’s raining and it’s going to snow,” she said.

Carmichael Outreach has secured federal and municipal funding to operate an overnight warming shelter by the end of April.

“People can come in and warm up, stay as long as they need. There will be tables and chairs set up if anyone needs to sit down, relax a little bit and warm up. We’re going to have coffee all night,” Chrysta Garner said.

The shelter is just one of many services offered to people living on the streets. Deb and Val are two Craven residents who hand out socks, mittens and snacks from the back of their vehicle.

“We do it ourselves,” Val said. “We’re not in any society or anything like that.”

Connections made bring results. Eric Poorman lost his belongings in a recent house fire. Carmichael Outreach and Gentle Road Church of Christ quickly got him back on his feet.

“Carmichael is pretty good,” he said. “They give me clothes, things that I lost so it’s very useful and the people here are nice so it works well and especially my church too, they help me with beds and things like that. “

Night supports aren’t just a winter need. Some people lived outside all summer. Carmichael hopes that one day the winter warming shelter can become a year-round service.
