ITV viewers were shocked after hearing Delia Balmer explain her harrowing experience of escaping a serial killer.

Over the past week, the four-part series Until I Kill You told the real story of former agency nurse Delia, who, in the 1990s, discovered that her boyfriend of three years, John Sweeney, had a much darker side.

Based on his 2017 memoir Living with a Serial Killer, it starring Motherland’s Anna Maxwell Martin as Delia And Vigil actor Shaun Evans as serial killer John.

This follows the start of the couple’s relationship after they met in a pub in London in 1991, when Delia tried to leave him after he became increasingly violent, until John attacked her with an axe.

After the crime drama series aired, the channel also aired a documentary in which Delia spoke on camera about her ordeal.

After explaining the details of their relationship, Delia then showed the cameras the exact bed where her partner attacked her after telling her she wanted to end their relationship.

“These ropes came out, and then he tied them to the bed, and then he tied my ankles and grabbed my arms and held me down,” she recalled.

“At first I struggled, then I found out it was better not to struggle because he fixed it, and it would get tighter if I struggled.”

Sweeney then pulled out a knife and gun hidden near the bed and began questioning her about her ex-boyfriends.

“He threatened to cut out my tongue if I screamed,” she said.

Sweeney later admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend and two men and “cutting up their bodies and throwing them in a canal” a few years earlier.

Hearing these disturbing details left viewers surprised, with some also shocked that Delia decided to keep the furniture she was attacked on.

“I’m surprised Delia still has all the furniture John made,” user Flopsy shared.

“I don’t understand why the real Delia Balmer would keep anything about John Sweeney – the table he made, the bed he tied her to, his drawings… I would like to get rid of it completely!” DVDFever added.

Many others also praised her courage in speaking out about her harrowing experience.

“My God, this is heartbreaking. Delia, you are a strong and courageous woman, and I am so happy that you found a happy future after this hell,” Charlotte wrote.

“Watch Until I Kill You: The Real Story”. It’s so amazing what a human being can deal with. I feel quite sick seeing Delia relive her hell,” Jacky shared.

After spending a week as a hostage and being repeatedly assaulted, Delia was freed by Sweeney.

However, her life was put in danger again when he attacked her a second time after being released on bail.

After being saved by a neighbor who hit Sweeney in the head with a baseball bat, Delia spent months in hospital recovering from her horrific injuries as he fled.

As one officer recalled in the documentary, they discovered a “bag full of items he would need to dispose of Delia’s body,” which included blades, rubber gloves, rope, a tarp and duct tape.

While initially holding Delia hostage, Sweeney admitted to the murder of his former partner, Melissa Halstead, whose dismembered body was found in a canal in the United States. The Netherlands in 1990.
