Correctional officer killed on Christmas Day after ‘assault on inmate’

A correctional officer was killed on Christmas morning at Ross Correctional Institution following an assault on an inmate, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction position.

Correctional Officer Andrew Lansing was described as a long-time employee who was well respected and loved by his colleagues.

“Losing a staff member is difficult, but losing a family member on Christmas Day to someone in our care is a tragedy beyond comprehension. Instead of going home after his shift to be with his family this holiday, Officer Lansing made the ultimate sacrifice and our agency will never be the same,” Director Annette Chambers-Smith said in a statement. press release.

The suspect inmate was transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.

Chambers-Smith said Ross Correctional Facility is currently under movement restrictions and the Ohio State Highway Patrol has an ongoing investigation.

“We ask that you keep Officer Lansing’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this devastating and tragic time,” Chambers-Smith said.

It’s unclear how the assault happened, but News 5 is working to find out more.
